What is a Dark Sky place?
A Dark Sky Community is a location where the community shares, appreciates, acknowledges and celebrates the value of the dark skies above their heads.
If the Community is proactive in preserving, acknowledging and celebrating their Dark Skies, they can receive an International certification from Dark Sky International (DSI) as a Dark Sky place.
Today, there are 40 Dark Sky Communities in the world - including the Palm Beach Dark Sky Community north of Sydney. There are about 230 Dark Sky places around the world certified by DSI.
How about making the Blue Mountains the next Dark Sky Community!
the pathway
Our aim to make Linden Observatory in the mid-mountains our site for the Blue Mountains Dark Sky Community.
That implies carrying out an inventory of the local lighting and, over the years, replacing the public lights that are not compliant with the lighting requirements - making the lighting more energy-efficient!
It also involve creating a space of dark skies activities and education, sharing our beautiful skies with the locals and non-locals.
Creating the Dark Sky Community requires the support of the municipality, local organisations and, of course, the local community!
In the long run, our goal is also to improve and preserve our darkness extended all the way to the upper mountains.
